GST HST Payment Canada 2025 : As per the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA), the GST/HST credit will be paid on April 4, 2025. This tax-free payment made four times a year is to help low-income and modest-income individuals and families make ends meet, indirectly extending some alleviation for the GST or HST that they actually pay on goods and services.
Eligibility Requirements
You are expected to be eligible for the GST/HST credit if the following requisites are met:
- Age and Residence: Must be 19 years and above and a resident in Canada in respect of income tax purposes. However, if you are younger than 19, you may still qualify for the benefit if you have ever had either a spouse or common-law partner or a child with whom you have lived or are still living with.
- Income Thresholds: Your adjusted family net income is another criterion to verify. For the payment period from July 2024 to June 2025, the CRA will utilize your 2023 tax return as the basis for the calculation of the credit. Thus, in order to gain this credit in 2024, one must file their taxes for the year 2023 on time.
Payment Amounts
The payment amount depends on your family situation and income. For the benefit year 2024-2025, the maximum annual amounts are as follows:
- $496 for single individuals.
- $650 for married or common-law partners.
- And an additional $171 for each child below 19 years of age.
These amounts will be divided into four quarterly payments.
Upcoming Payment Schedule
The GST/HST credit payments for 2025 will be issued on the following dates:
- January 3, 2025
- April 4, 2025
- July 4, 2025
- October 3, 2025
Payment is generally issued on the 5th working day of July, October, January, and April. In case you do not receive your payment on the anticipated date, please wait for 10 working days before contacting the CRA for assistance.
How To Apply
In most instances, you do not have to make a separate application for the GST/HST credit; the CRA establishes eligibility automatically upon the submission of the annual income tax return. Therefore, it is extremely important to file your income tax return on time, even if no income is being claimed thereon.
Special Considerations
- New Residents : New residents coming to Canada must fill Form RC151, GST/HST Credit and Canada Carbon Rebate Application for Individuals Who Become Residents of Canada, and send it along with their tax return to the applicable tax center.
- Turning 19 : In case you will turn 19 before April 2025, you should file the 2023 tax return. The CRA will check your eligibility, and if eligible, the first payment with respect to your eligibility would be paid out in the first-quarter payment after your 19th birthday.
- Marital Status Changes : The changes in your marital status may affect the amount you receive. Make sure to notify the CRA to avoid underpayment or overpayment in case of any change.
