Fuel Price Drop Alert: South Africans To Pay Less From Midnight Tonight

fuel price drop South Africa 2025: Great news for Mzansi! Fuel prices will sharply decrease at midnight, a drop for the second month in a row that genuinely offers relief to motorists all over the country.

The Department of Mineral Resources and Energy (DMRE) has officially announced that the fuel price changes will now come into effect from Tuesday, 2 April; a welcome breather for many. Diesel is first to drop, followed by petrol and paraffin. Here are the changes:

  • Diesel (0.005% sulphur) price will decrease by 86 cents per litre
  • Diesel (0.05% sulfur) will see a drop of 84 cents
  • Petrol 95 octane will decrease by 72 cents
  • Petrol 93 octane will drop by 58 cents

Illuminating paraffin will decrease by 82 cents

According to the department, the reduction is due to the Brent Crude oil price dropping and the rand strengthening slightly against the dollar.

Why the Drop?

The average Brent crude oil price declined from $74.89 (R1,374.74) to $71.04 (R1,304.02) over the month. A lot of this has to do with continued oil output from non-OPEC countries, while OPEC+ is slated to add a few more barrels in April—albeit not many.

The other factor is the strengthening of the rand against the dollar, from R18.50 to R18.30, giving relief from the pressures on fuel prices.

No Hike In Fuel Levies

Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana also offered some welcome stability in his 12 March Budget Speech, announcing the following:

  • The general fuel levy on petrol will remain unchanged at 396c/l and on diesel at 384c/l
  • The Road Accident Fund (RAF) levy will remain unchanged at 218c/l
  • The carbon fuel levy will increase only marginally by 3c/l, now making the total 14c/l on petrol and 17c/l on diesel

So even if the carbon tax just went up a bit, it’s a net win for motorists this month.
