NSFAS 2025 payout dates: Great news for South African students! The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) has announced the roll-out of increased allowances for 2025, which is a much stronger financial safety net for students in an ever-rising cost environment.

What’s The fuss? – There Have Been Increases In Allowances!
In 2025, NSFAS will not hold back. Instead, allowances have been raised across the board in line with inflation increases in student expenses and living costs- and mostly to benefit TVET college students who have reported being treated like second-class citizens compared to universities.
TVET College Students- You Have New Terms Set
Be that as it may, dear TVET learners, you have received good news. It is indeed your bumper haul in the increase in support.
Old versus New TVET Allowances:
- Previous Amount: R10,000 per annum
- New Amount (2025): R14,600 per annum
- That’s a whopping increase of 46%!
This new sum is inclusive of:
- Transport/accommodation
- Meals
- Personal care
That hitherto positions TVET students much closer to the confines of what university students typically have to receipt, thus creating a more level playing field.
University Students – What’s Staying the Same
University students will continue to have access to:
- Living Allowance: R16,500 per annum (monthly)
- Book Allowance: Upto R5200 dependent on course
- Transport or Accommodation Allowance: Different per location and need
Not much has changed in here, but it signifies that students have the basics.
When Will You Get Paid? – 2025 Payment Updates
Schedule for NSFAS Payments: Payment will occur each month, starting from February 2025, according to your institution’s academic calendar. Most of them will be deposited:
- Directly into your NSFAS bank account, or
- Through your institution’s disbursement system.
So don’t forget to update your contact and banking information in order to avoid delays!
Expenses Covered By NSFAS in 2025
The new improved allowance covers:
- Tuition Fees (fully)
- Accommodation (up to the approved limits)
- Meals and Groceries
- Travel and Transport
- Learning Materials (i.e. books, technology, data).
