Final Warning: SASSA Gold Cards Expire Soon, Switch To Black Card by May 2025

SASSA card switch 2025: SASSA (South African Social Security Agency) has finally decided to give another extension to beneficiaries of grants for transitioning to the black SASSA/Postbank cards. The new date for compliance is May 2025, thereby giving beneficiaries another opportunity to go through the transition from the old gold cards to the new ones. If you haven’t converted it yet, now is your time – and this is what you need to know.

Why Change To Black SASSA Cards?

Under the new payment system from Postbank, referred to as Secure Payments, the black card will provide the necessary infrastructure to reduce fraud and facilitate faster transactions and improved access to funds. The gold SASSA cards have previously been phased out due to security risks and technical complications. Postbank also explained that grant payments will cease to be supported on the old cards starting June 2025. In other words, there will be no payment processed unless you upgrade to the black card before the deadline.

Who Needs To Switch?

This update is for all SASSA permanent grant beneficiaries such as:

  • OAP (Old Age Pensioners)
  • The Disability Grant Holders
  • Child Support Grant Recipients
  • Foster Care & Care Dependency Beneficiaries

Note: No SRD R350 grant recipient is required to acquire a black card, since they receive their payments through other banking accounts or alternate collection methods.

How To Get The Black SASSA Card

To make a switch, beneficiaries need to go to their nearest Post Office branch or Postbank mobile unit with:

  • A valid South African ID
  • The old SASSA gold card
  • Any formal proof of address

There is no charge for the card, and the switching procedure takes only a few minutes. Staff are on-site to assist elderly and disabled person.

What Next After May 2025?

You’re looking at a possibility of your grant payment being delayed or blocked if you do not switch before May; however, Postbank and SASSA will not grant any further extension-this is it!

In addition, the black card allows:

  • Withdrawal of cash from Postbank ATMs
  • Purchases in retail stores
  • No monthly charges on receiving the grant.
